Bolt Hits Theaters

Since Bolt hits the theaters this week I thought I would list some of the shots I actually worked on in the film. Possibly no one cares, but it's fun to reminisce. In order of appearance:

1) Mindy from the network - (long shot) of her threatening to fire everyone
2) Bolt - pulling his head out of bars
3) Bolt - falling back on to his back as
pigeons follow him through the bars
4) Rhino - Cracking his neck and says "Starving!"
5) Rhino - Rolls up to gas station
6) Rhino - Hears the call "Ring Ring"
7) Rhino - Exits his ball for first time and laughs
8) Rhino - Stops in shock of what Bolt says
9) Rhino - "What did you say"?
10) Bolt - Turns away from Rhino in shame
11) Rhino - "Who are you?!"
12) Bolt - Trying to explain but is interrupted by Rhino.
13) Rhino - Motivational speech, "Who infiltrated Calico's labs?!"
14) Rhino - Inside fogged up ball "Arctic hover base!"
15) Bolt - On hillside, tells Rhino
"Have to do things a little differently"
16) Rhino - Pulls map from underneath fat guys tray and
eats a fry (one of my favorite shots)
17) Agent - "Bolt needs to stay....right here!"
18) Dr. Calico - "Your dog is nowhere near...."

This movie was a lot of fun and I had such a great time working with this animation crew. We learned a ton from each other. I'm excited to see us take everything we learned and now apply it to Rapunzel, it's going to be Awesome!

Hope you all enjoy the movie. Please let me know what you all think.......now everyone go see it this weekend!

I will see it this weekend, and now I'll know which scenes to watch for. I'm excited to see how it ends. You'd think I would know what happens already, but I don't.

I can't wait to see it... especially in 3-D!!! I'm planning on taking my oldest daughter for some fun, one-on-one time. I'm not sure I'll go this weekend (opening night crowds, you know), but we're DEFINITELY going! :)

What a great month for you, with not one but TWO of your "babies" being born! ;)

Hyrum, my niece saw the trailer for Bolt on TV on Sunday. For HOURS after she ran around pretending to crack her neck and say "STARVING!" and then she would laugh hysterically. She thought it was the funniest thing she'd ever seen.

So is your name going to be on the credits?! You need to go to imdb.com and have it added. Chris Bacon has all his work credited there-pretty cool to see it. Congratulations on your baby and Bolt.

We saw it tonight and loved it.
We had to battle our way through all the screaming teenagers that were there to see the Twilight movie. (Please tell me I never acted that way. Ok I know I did) Then when we were driving home they were talking about Bolt and Twilight on the radio. They were saying how the critics loved Bolt, and didn't really care for the Twilight movie.
My kids absolutely loved it, and now McKartnee keeps asking me why she can't have a real puppy like Bolt. Great work Higs. It turned out awesome.

I loved the movie. It was *does the ever popular hamster move* AWESOME!!!! :) I also requested they add you to the imdb.com database as one of the animators of the film. I was totally stoked, and Christy and I kept saying "Our brother in law did that" LOL

It looks good, but I read an article about how old school full keyframe animation like this is too expensive and time consuming for the studios to keep making these domestically (India ? China?)

Motion-capture is cheaper. Soon all these movies will be done with mo-cap instead of old-school keyframing.

Thanks Leodora for that swell uplifting post. I actually like motion capture when used right but it will be a sad day if "old school" key frame animation loses all its money to the freaky looking weirdness that is "motion capture". But hey, the way Bolt did at the box office........maybe I'll go apply for a job in India.

I haven't been by your blog in a long while and missed all these posts.

I love it when animators detail what they did on a film. It really matters to me(especially when I love a film as I did Bolt). I wish that for story it was as "simple" as "I did this part"-as you know our sequences are more often than not redone/split up/gone over, etc etc. It's just the way of things in production, but it's one reason I find it so cool to see that, yes, this animator did such and such.

All that said-I loved your particular scenes and know them well after 3 viewings. Heartiest congratulations on just a tremendous, wonderful job. You deserve to be very proud.

I've said it before and it bears repeating: Bolt had some of the very best character animation I've ever seen in CG--up there with the absolute best(and exceeding previous high points in some cases).
Good show!
